Alexander Technique Lessons
Most of us move with some degree of tension and imbalance using poor habitual movement patterns. This impacts on our natural co-ordination and can result in pain long-term.
Alexander technique works through ‘thinking in activity’. With the guidance of a qualified teacher, you will gain a heightened brain and body awareness of unnecessary habits and reactive patterns so that they can gently be stopped from happening. A balanced state of your musculature is created and through simple movements you will learn how to sustain this new state.
Instead of doing more or trying harder, Alexander Technique is an education of un-doing unwanted movement habits to become more balanced, healthier and happier.
To begin with, Alexander Technique may appear a passive and unconscious learning process.
But, as unnecessary movement habits are dropped and the body self-organizes to balanced, easy movement, problems and pain often dissipate.
At the same time, you are learning consciously to take charge, to help the process, and prevent the reoccurance of problems.
Rather than depend on a practitoner to fix you, Alexander Technique is a method that will eventually become your self-help tool. Many therapies will only provide short term gain – if at all – because if the habitual pattern of movement isn’t changed, the pain will continue to re-appear or become chronic.
Alexander Technique is not a therapy (although there are some therapeutic benefits) nor a quick fix. It is your personal development and investment to future proof your health and wellbeing.
One to One Lesson
Alexander Technique is best learned on a one-to-one basis in a quiet environment through gentle explanation and instruction, with light hands-on guidance when needed.
I encourage discussion around observation and exploration so that you become more engaged in your learning and re-education process and to accelerate understanding.
As everyone is different, lessons are tailored for your individual needs. Habits of a lifetime are being unlayered and therefore a course of lessons is needed.
You will start to observe your habits and then work with simple movements such as sitting, standing, bending the knees and walking; the basics of all movements.
Part of a lesson may include lying down in the classic Alexander Technique semi-supine position for maximum support and relief for the back.
We also discuss your observations and discoveries at home and work, so that you are applying the technique to your life straight away.
All work is done fully clothed, ideally loose fitting for comfort and ease of movement.
